Diagnostic testing The neurologist may recommend certain diagnostic tests, depending on the patient’s symptoms, medical history and physical examination. Frequently the neurologist will recommend electrodiagnostic testing to measure the electrical activity of muscles and nerves. However, during a regular neurology doctor visit, tests such as the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) or Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) provide a quick way to assess cognitive skills in people with suspected deficits. Electrodiagnostic tests, such as electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction velocity (NCV). These tests evaluate and diagnose disorders of the muscles and motor neurons.
